Kneeling in front of Trajan, she takes his hands into hers and tells him her son has been murdered, begging the emperor to dispense justice.
Trajan is on his way to a military council to prepare for the conflict that will turn into the Dacian Wars.
He bends down helping the woman to her feet and promises that he will do as she asks, when he comes back from war. But she holds on to him and says, “What if you never come back? What then?”.
Upon hearing these words, Trajan ordered the council to be postponed and stayed until the culprit was prosecuted.
This legend became known as Trajan justice.
