This is one of my favourite sayings from Veneto - four words that aptly describe how far and how fast trouble can travel:
‘El pezo el gà la gamba lunga.’ (‘Trouble has long legs.’) Alberico Collina

This is a saying from Trentino Alto Adige that reminds us of one of the many dangers of losing our temper and raising our voice:
‘Chi gh'à tort ziga più fort.’ (‘Those in the wrong shout the loudest.’) Alberico Collina Calabria is almost completely surrounded by the sea, so it's not surprising that many of its sayings have a piscatorial theme. This apparent fishing advice is in fact a warning that you shouldn't trust those who don't talk:
‘A jumi cittu un ji a piscà.’ (‘Don’t fish in quiet waters.’) Alberico Collina Sometimes people need to talk, and sometimes you have to let them; the process being as important as the content if not more. This eloquent saying from Abruzzo seems to sum it up well:
‘Nu pare de rêcchie ‘bbùne sì quanta lêngue stracche.’ (‘A good pair of ears tires many tongues.’) Alberico Collina This saying from Abruzzo reminds us of how scepticism can be valuable to our survival:
‘Chi dùbbete nem berìsce.’ (‘Doubters don’t die.’) Alberico Collina All aspiring leaders could learn something from this saying from Veneto:
‘Inpara prima a servir, se tu ol saver comandar.’ (‘Learn to serve if you want to lead.’) Alberico Coillina This deceptively simple saying from Apulia reveals the power of asking questions:
‘A lingua trova a gente.’ (‘The tongue finds people.’) Alberico Collina Although this saying from Campania has an ominous ring of truth to it, there is also something comically surreal about its wording:
'A morte nun tene crianza.’ (‘Death has no manners.’) Alberico Collina |
